Before and after wasting disease in common eelgrass Zostera marina along the French Atlantic coasts: a general overview and first accurate mapping ArchiMer
Godet, L; Fournier, Jonathan; Van Katwijk, M; Olivier, F; Le Mao, Patrick; Retiere, C.
We examined the original manuscripts of a French national survey conducted in 1933 on the state of common eelgrass Zostera marina beds along the French Atlantic coasts during the period when wasting disease struck the entire North Atlantic population in the 1930s. Based on GIS related techniques and old sets of aerial photographs, we present the first accurate mapping of the Z. marina beds before wasting disease occurred and assess their spatial recolonization since the 1950s in the Chausey Archipelago (France), which contains large Z. marina beds. The national survey confirmed that the Z. marina beds almost totally disappeared from the French coasts during the 1930s. However, the disease symptoms seem to have begun locally a few years before. On the study...

Comparaison démographique des populations de deux annélides polychètes seIon l'orientation des baies dans l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent ArchiMer
Caron, A; Desrosiers, G; Retiere, C; Hudier, E.
Variations in demographic parameters between intertidal populations of Nereis virens and Nephtys caeca were studied. These polychaetes are major component of the Macoma balthica community in the Lower St. Lawrence estuary (Quebec, Canada). We compared spatial distribution between differently oriented shores in a small geographic area. Our results revealed an interpopulation variability that appears to be dependent on hydrodynamical processes, edaphic parameters and biological interactions. In north and northeast oriented flats, the higher densities of young individuals of Nereis virens are found in the higher tidal levels where we observed larval recruitment and the highest organic matter contents. On the other hand, the lower densities of adult worms are...

Croissance de juvéniles de Nereis diversicolor nourris avec des détritus d'halophytes ArchiMer
Meziane, T; Retiere, C.
The comparative effect of the uptake of fresh and degraded detritus of halophytic plants, harvested from salt marches of the Mont Saint-Michel Bay (France), on the growth of a juvenile population of the annelid polychaete N. diversicolor (L.) was studied under experimental conditions in summer 1993. Fresh and degraded detritus of Spartina anglica, Halimione portulacoides and Salicornia europeae, as well as the green algae Enteromorpha sp. were distributed separately to homogenous set of juveniles for a 75 d period. The highest growth rate was obtained for worms fed with Enteromorpha sp. Administration of fresh detritus of a given halophyte species to N. diversicolor juveniles always leads to a significantly higher growth rate than did degraded detritus....

Effects a long terme du fonctionnement de l'usine maremotrice sur l'evolution du peuplement des sables fins vaseux de la Rance ArchiMer
Clavier, J; Lechapt, J P; Retiere, C; Rivain, V.
Dynamic studies of the Abra alba-Melinna palmata muddy sand community from 1972 to 1982 show that after an initial recolonization until 1976 species richness and density exhibit a steady trend. Three groups of species and five main categories of population abundance evolution are deduced from qualitative and quantitative sampling. Rapid stabilization of abiotic factors occurs after the starting up of the tidal power dam in 1966 and the authors' evolutive scheme reflects both importance of hydrodynamic effects in the dispersion of benthic organisms and demographic strategies of main populations, especially annelids (80-90% of the community). Among the six annelid dominant species, four took part in the recolonization of the biotopa although they are able to...

La Baie de Seine: Peuplements et especes benthiques en regime perturbe ArchiMer
Cabioch, L; Retiere, C.
The waters of the Seine River are polluted by urban, industrial and agricultural effluents. In addition direct industrial wastes inputs are emptied into the estuary. Within the limits of the Seine Bay program it was not possible to research pollution impacts on every estuarine ecosystem link; so only benthos have been studied. To take time response of organisms into account, the authors have defined indicators or quantitative evaluation of parameters, reflecting physiological state. They have studied population fluctuations caused by natural or man induced effects.

Role of biotic interactions on seasonal migrations of the macrozoobenthos living in the upper tidal-flat of the Mont-Saint-Michel bay, France ArchiMer
Meziane, T; Retiere, C.
On the tidal flat of the western part of the Mont-Saint-Michel bay, the macrozoobenthos of the upper flat is characterised by an assemblage of the Macoma balthica community. The dominant species are M. balthica, Nereis diversicolor and Corophium volutator. A field monitoring during a 1-year period along a four-stations transect perpendicularly to the shore showed that biotic interactions affected the local distributions of these species. This was particularly obvious from late spring to late summer while, because of the density increases, competitions for space and/or resources were induced, which stimulated migrations. Intra-specific competition seemed to induce the migration of the 1-year-old M. balthica. Consequently, the migration of the young bivalves...
